In the "Wake"

Dear Symposians,

How ironic, Dan, that in the “wake” of Mom’s poem you were inspired to look beyond positivism to more unsettling conflicts. Me too! Mom, to be fair, the poem I started writing after reading your water poem was more directly inspired by other people and a different conversation, but your poem, and your reminder of the tsunami news, did make me think of how we should not just settle with our stillwater metaphor.

This is an unfinished poem, or at least one that I am not altogether satisfied with. It wants to end where it does and say nothing more, yet I present it defiantly as a challenge: how, symposians, would you end this water poem of mine?

Josh, you will note it does not rhyme, or rhymes only randomly, although this may be a case where rhyming would not work. Then again, maybe my lapses into trimeter don’t work either.

Anne, by the way, I agree with your take of Dan’s deviant art site. Mom, don’t look. As for Googledox, Dan, is this the same as “Google docs” requiring a gmail address? If so, I use this to have my bill-paying spreadsheet accessible wherever I am. It works nicely for this, but does that mean if we use this as a group platform everyone will see the bills I’m paying/not paying? Kinda detracts from the poetry.

A website would be nice, though. Meanwhile, here is my challenge poem, via pdf.

Love, Jon
