Ramadan
The rock behind the rock we're on
was hidden from our point of view
until it caught the setting sun
and nothing but a sliver to
paint shadows on our faces and
give us a dusky hint of who
we are at night: we're all the same,
imperfect sinners turning to
the stars, a cross, a crescent moon
and taking time for penance: you
have Lent and we have Ramadan
and each of us is hoping to
make it to heaven somehow and
get through life on this rock we're on.
I don't pretend to understand
the purpose of the fasting or
the reason we should watch the moon.
I guess it meant something before
they called it Lent or Ramadan,
before we rested faith upon
the Prophet's revelations or
the resurrection of the Son,
but this is what we're looking for:
salvation past the ceremonies,
focus in our daily worship,
sustenance beyond the sunset,
anything to make us more
at peace and not at odds upon
this hot, dry dessert rock we're on.

The Music Project - An Imminent Convergence!
We're quickly approaching the Birthday'bration and reunion at the farm, and many of us are totally enrapt in the music project through which we can share some of our all-time favorites. Let's just go ahead and call this 'The 1st Annual Music Sharing Symposia'...(ok, temp 'til we think of something better).
Before I share my final list for 2013, I will recommend that for anyone who has not yet compiled there list--a CD's worth at most--there is a resource available at most FYE stores where you can search their entire catalog to select songs to burn to your own CD... For roughly $20, you can order them however you want, select cover art, etc, and have a disc burned for you within about 15 minutes after your selection is finalized. It's an easy way to compile your music, and inclusive of song you may not yet have in your own music collection. Caveat--their catalog is expansive, but, as Jon and Andrew had figured out, may still be lacking in certain areas...you'll hear their experience in a few weeks.

mosquito
the little-brained mosquito dances
round the room on paper wings
theres wisdom in the way life sings
to give us fools a fighting chance
theres grace in every circumstance
of life if one keeps listening
for Gods design upon the wings
and nature’s music in the dance
theres also pain sometimes disease
that pierces through the leather veil
and then eventually theres death
but first for all the tragedies
there is the whisper of a breath
that grace and wisdom will prevail
the little-brained mosquito dances

and natures way to make life sing
