John Stuart Mill is too 19th C, rather involved (sometimes awkwardly) in the 'women question' and formidable in what I'll call the 'adolescence' of modern democracy--Ibsen more artistically demarcates this period. Begs questions where 'new and decidely non-western' democracies are at: pre-Ibsen infancy? The etch-a-sketch has fully been shaken...
