serendipity
This 6th installment of Aging America, my new volume of short stories, kind of wrote its own ending. I had presented the first and second parts to my writers' group over the past weeks, and while we knew the idea was intriguing, none had a confident suggestion where it might go. Josef likes a band called Cage the Elephant--we all do in Roztoky, having heard the albums multiple times! I allude to that band, Joan Baez, Herman's Hermits, but to fill out one of the protagonists, I made an original that fit both my poetry anthology and a theme in the story.
Stara Evropa has 15 stories (17 counting the reserves) to honor and attempt the way James Joyce's Dubliners threaded his together. I want Aging America to have its own set of inspirations, but it's nice to think that possibly 40% of it is now drafted.
Here's 'Truculence', a little play on the title of a previous story about the church cats; this one features an organic farm, perhaps like the one near Blanchardville:

Ever Since the Dove Came Down (Matthew 3:16-17)
You've got a place to be.
You've got energy.
You've got a name.
Your life will never be the same.
Ever since the dove came down,
you are a child of God.
This is who you are.
You have a Father who
is pleased with you
and considers you his own.
You will never be alone.
You can sing, "How sweet the sound"
to be a child of God.
By the waters of a river you've been saved.
By a voice from heaven above
you've been received.
You are loved. You are forgiven.
You've been pulled out of the grave
to be reborn, to be alive, and to believe.
And from this day on
you have a Savior who
will walk with you
and carry you along.
You are weak but he is strong.
He has picked you off the ground.
You are a child of God.
This is what it means to be
in heaven's hold.
You are forever loved.
You're forgiven of
your former ways.
Every day's a brand new day.
Ever since the dove came down
you are a child of God.

All the time and everyday
Matthew 11:28-30; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19
Dear Jesus set your yoke upon me.
Teach me all I need to know.
I'm thankful for the life you give me,
Grateful for the love you show.
Dear Jesus let me walk beside you.
Teach me what it means to pray.
I'm joyful to be learning from you,
Joyful that you lead the way.
And this is how I ought to pray,
Thankful that your yoke is easy,
Joyful that you're walking with me
All the time and every day.
Dear God as the world weighs on me,
Send your spirit more and more
To lift the load and to remind me
Of all I should be thankful for.
Dear God though my walk is weary
I rejoice that I can stay
Upon this path with Jesus near me
Every mile and every day.
And this is how I ought to pray,
Thankful that your yoke is easy,
Joyful that you're walking with me
All the time and every day.
This is how we're taught to pray,
Thankful, joyful, always easy
Knowing that we walk with Jesus
All the time and every day.
I pray now Holy Spirit fill me
With a will that's not my choice.
Walk beside me and remind me
To give thanks and to rejoice.
Holy Spirit, live within me.
Be the way for me to pray
Ceaselessly and never ending,
All the time and every day.
This is how we're taught to pray,
Thankful, joyful, always with the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
All the time and every day.

I've put an open-access PDF for these plays in a 'more literary works' page atop Stara Evropa:

A NEW BLOG: WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT PRAYER
Here, without a link, is the first post. Each post hereafter will quote an excerpt from prior journals and a few other sources, but for this first post I have used that space to give thanks. You are all a part of this!
ALWAYS - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19
Three absolute imperatives (do this and always this) followed by a why (because this is the will) and prepositions of the Trinity around us (of God, in Christ, by the Spirit, for you).
We are, in our quest to be joyful, thankful and prayerful, surrounded by the Trinity! Which makes everything possible, of course. Constant joy, endless prayer, boundless appreciation, each an impossible task by themselves, yet this is what we are called to do.
How? By remembering the why and relying on the power of the Spirit, but we have even more instruction here. We are given a three way primer, another interconnected trinity if you will.
How can we be joyful? Through prayer and thanksgiving. How do we pray? By appreciating what we have and being joyful about it. And how do we appreciate? By praying about everything and turning it into joy.
But how do we do this constantly, endlessly and boundlessly? It will not be easy, and maybe we will be partial and imperfect for now, but we must not quench the spirit!

Joshua Lamken's Last Flight
At the time I was a student pilot, taking flights through U of I’s Institute of Aviation that would last much more than an hour. Flying was exhilarating, but by the end of a long flight, my back teeth were floating. Finally, around Thanksgiving, I knew I would have to let the administrators know that I couldn’t continue with the program.

Andrew's Day
Weekends doing different things,
Kayak days and getaways
To tournaments and family flings,
Europe days, Wisconsin days,
The first days in our second home,
Then getting back to Griffith days
And wherever else our souls may roam.
Fingerboards, PlayStation time,
Mazda days and Culver days
And days to plan and days to climb.
Every day can be a day
To celebrate all that you do
But today's the day you graduate
To all the future holds for you.
Congratulations, Andrew!
stories and S2L2A3
My draft of Grounded features some of the bands Josh and I grew up together with (as distinct from the half-generation earlier that Jon brought home as early as 840 Parkwood). Rainbow Records, when we moved (to east Park Ridge;) served our purchasing preferences equally, I think. Anne, did you buy records there? I think it closed up right around the time when TCBY moved in around the corner...
When I wrote the story, I didn't Google anything. Background for the impaired character--a drummer going deaf--includes: "Never a legend in anyone’s mind, he played in several warm-up bands across the eastern half of America, mainly. Nothing memorable—‘The Rustlers’ probably the only thing YouTubable, if anybody checked." Go figure, it was worth checking out:

But to the second part of the subject line: let's keep Josh's S2L2A3 alive! My list would probably never include 'Wipe Out', for the record! But it would include 'Veterans of the Psychic Wars', especially as my story has caused me to reflect on that artifact of Rock.
Whadya got?

image exercise
And, new to routines, Monday evenings have brought me to a wonderful writers' circle and occasional 'open mic' recitals of poetry. Of course these things have been in Prague for the more than 21 years I've been here, but it's good to latch in now, in the glow of writing for fun and a fair fullness of life. I've already shared this poem with Jon, as it involves him, and will see how my writer peers regard it in the 'rules' of an image story: one line of launching dialogue, one immediate image, one reflection that follows, a crescendo of quick proportions, a return to the dialogue as if the middle territory hadn't happened. And so:

Today's, though, is a sonnet to celebrate sport and the blessings that come with every earnest attempt:

40 (to a fellow English Major)
For one who is now 40 years of age
From someone who has turned that yellow page.
The story goes its own way pretty fast
And shouldn't dwell on something that is cast
On every mortal and at every stage,
But here is what I know, take it as sage
Advice or tired words: what's past is past,
And every chapter keeps the story going
And every page is worth the reading through
And turning to the next. We may be growing
Older, but our stories for the ages,
If told well, will be more than middle pages.
