Inspired by this project to post a poem a week (or a panoply of poems from records past), I tried my hand at a villanelle, which by definition forces formula. Forgive its roughness and weigh in on its title, whether 'craft' or 'art':
this love of craft and art
To gauge the beating of a broken heart,
I gathered grist from literature and found
one’s guaranteed to gently fall apart.
That’s not to recommend a place to start:
if magical, Queen Mab is not renowned
to gauge the beating of a broken heart,
regardless of the daydreams she’ll impart
from pages of a book that’s duty-bound
(one’s guaranteed to gently fall apart).
I harnessed then the horse before the cart,
quixotically surveyed the land around
to gauge the beating of a broken heart;
I looked for eyes that focus more than dart,
lips that rest assured, smile, and yet resound
one’s guaranteed to gently fall apart….
We’re waylaid in this love of craft and art;
team up, perhaps, the search of sky and ground
to gauge the beating of a broken heart—
one’s guaranteed to gently fall apart.
