a math minute

or more--Eric, we need your oversight!

This is the 400th post on Stillwater Symposium. 400 is a wonderfully square number, as 2x2 and 10x10 equal 20x20--not the first time that multiples of squares make a square (144 does, and I suppose 4 is the first), but 400 is still quite 'rounded'.

Squares imply dimension; cubes even moreso. So if anyone out there is turning 8, 27, 64, 81, please post your impressions!

Only after having helped my kids with their math homework, I realized I've turned a square number: 49. My running line for the past couple years is that my age has become a good Scrabble score (and y'all know I don't score that well in Scrabble), but this year should show its difference.

Ergo this slapdash poem, replete with an animal at the end, to qualify for Lost Menagerie:

       post-calculus

The serene inside a square
is why I want to wander
there, circling the edges’
truth or dare, then backhoeing
the fields we share for better
schools, paths, and sanctuaries:
Noah’s dove seeks out this prayer.
