Just off the press, a promotional video of our school. The Gwendolyn Brooks poem "We Real Cool" that has been on the Blanchardville fridge leads off by the coincidence that we were studying that poem when the film crew came in. The poem is wonderfully complex, and I'm blessed to have heard it live at Maine South circa 1982:
We Real Cool The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel.
We real cool. We
Left school. We
Lurk late. We
Strike straight. We
Sing sin. We
Thin gin. We
Jazz June. We
Die soon.
Perhaps not the most uplifting thing that's come out of my classroom, but I'm pleased my student Maria rolled with it!
